WATER MAIN BURSTS

WELLINGTON SUPPLY AFFECTED

Wellington, This Day A bad break occurred this morning in an old 24-inch trunk water main with the result that the flow of water was sufficient to lift the surface of the Hutt road. The main has been in continuous use for over 60 years. The cause of the break is not yet known, but the main is particularly susceptible to earthquake shocks and an appreciable shock occurred shortly before 6 a.m. The drop in pressure in the city allowed much water to escape from hydrants, and it ran down streets until it could be valved off Many householders found themselves waterless until the pressure was readjusted from the Karori reservoir. The repairing of the main may take some time. and shifts will be worked
