BONUS TO GAS WORKERS
GOVERNMENT OFFER Auckland, Feb. 3. Though no official anouncement has yet been made, it was learnt yesterday that, as a solution of the recent difficulties in the gas industry, the Government has agreed to guarantee the payment to all workers of a war production bonus of 3d an hour. This offer has been made on the condition that an official is appointed by the Government to supervise costs of production and the efficiency of the operations. The offer was made at a lunch-hour meeting of the gasworks employees yesterday and was accepted. Mr H. E. Moston, Secretary of Labour, and Mr C. H. Benny, Under-Secretary of Mines, took part in the discussions. The offer of the bonus followed further discussions in Auckland yesterday between representatives of the Government and the trades council on a scheme for co-operation in the industry. Messrs Moston and Benney took part in them. It was announced yesterday by Mr F. Craig, president of the trades council that a Government statement would be made shortly. Work in all departments of the gasworks proceeded normally during the day.
