LOW MERCHANT TONNAGE LOSSES
DECEMBER RESULTS London, Jan. 10. The total merchant tonnage lost by U-boat action in December was again low, despite the extension of the operating areas, says a joint statement on U-boat warfare last December issued under the authority of Mr Churchill and President Roosevelt. It adds that air and sea forces destroyed fewer U-boats during the month because of several factors, including the enemy’s increased caution. Our supply routes, however, are well secured against U-boat attacks. U-boats in 1943 sank 40 per cent, of the merchant tonnage sunk in 1942. On the other hand, the United Nations tonnage constructed in 1943 was approximately double the tonnage delivered in 1942. Nearly half the tonnage lost in 1943 was sunk in the first three months, 27 per cent, was sunk in the second three months, and onlj' 26 per cent, in the last six months.
