AUCKLAND’S WATER SUPPLY
RECORD HIGH CONSUMPTION LEVEL Auckland, This Day. Auxiliary water sources are being harnessed to augment Auckland’s dwindling supply under drought conditions and by next week the city and suburbs will be drawing at least 3,000.000 gallons daily by pumping from below gravitation levels. The present consumption is at the record nigh average level of 18.000.000 gallons daily which was reached last autumn. This includes heavy demands of camps, war industries and service hospitals. City authorities are urging economy in the use of water to avoid the need of compulsory restrictions. Reports coming in tell of falling water supplies in districts where people are dependent upon tank supplies, shallow wells and small streams particularly on farms, and at some holiday resorts. A number of bookings at resorts where the water position is most acute have been cancelled by accommodation house proprietors because they are unable to accept guests. Auckland’s December rainfall was only about half the monthly average and only .14 inch has fallen so far this month.—P.A.
