WATCH YOUR STEP !

(Original) A brand new bridge now spans our weir Up here at Roding River. It’s a wonderful bridge (or so we think) Our thanks go out to the giver. Pop had a job to paint that bridge, Up here at Roding River, The day was hot—the paint was thin. Did he give up? No, never ! The job completed, he came home, With a little paint to spare, Just enough for a flower box. Or the seat of the garden chair. Pop glanced around to find a place, In which to daub his paint, His eyes iit on the back-door.-step,— Too late for Mum’s restraint. It did look grand, that back-door step, All done in Dreadnought grey; “ ’Twill be very nice,” said Pop to us—“lf it’s allowed to stay.” We caught the glint in Old Pop’s eye, We knew he’d be on guard; To watch our step, each time we tripped To and from the yard. We high-stepped in and one-stepped out To the tune of “Watch Your Step”! Till one of us fell with a shovel of chips, It’s a moment we’ll never forget. Pop grabbed the old paint brush again, His remarks were really cute. But imprinted to-day on that surface of grey— Are the marks of his hob-nailed boot. By June and Lois Scott, Roding River Waterworks.
