WILFORD GROVE STUD

A valuable addition to the Wilford Grove stud of pedigree milking shorthorns has recently been made by the purchase of the high quality young bull “Rugby Achilles” from the North Island. Miss Rita Arnold continues to show enterprise in establishing and breeding up one of the most outstanding stud herds of pedigree milking shorthorns in this Dominion. Much success has followed her importations of females from the North Island, not only for high butterfat production but also for the splendid dairy type apparent in the progeny. A study of the pedigree of the new herd sire Rugby Achilles, shows how well he is line bred to Bon Accord Nancy Lee, the present top cow in the Wilford Grove stud. Both trace back to the wellknown bull “Muriwai Pride” a grandson of the highest C.O.R. pedigree milking shorthorn cow in the Dominion, Glenthorpe Lady. This cow is the winner of the £SO prize donated by the N.Z. Milking Shorthorn Association, for production. She has held the mature class leadership for the breed in this Dominion since 1924. Three C.O.R. records in three consecutive years were: 12.910.2 lbs milk, 550.05 lbs butterfat; 16.805.2 lbs milk, 671.63 lbs butterfat; 20,132.0 lbs milk. 856.00 lbs butterfat. Rugby Achilles is by a son of MuriVolunleer of Gjs elaoinu shrdlu cmfw wai Pride, "Dominion Archeen’s Volunteer of Ruakura,” and out of the reserve champion Royal Show cow, “Dominion Auriel of Ruakura.” Both sire and dam are further line bred to a top notch cow Dominion Archeen of Ruakura in the Ruakura Stud. The new importation i s a neatly built deep bodied bull, particularly well sprung in the ribs, a good top line. Colour dark red with little white. He possesses an excellent constitution, and shorthorn characters arc stamped throughout. Head well carried, showing good breed qualifications and action free and stylish. This bull was bred -by Messrs Green Bros., Hamilton, Waikato and was the highest priced bull at the recent combined sale of Messrs R. D. Cochrane and Green Bros.
