OBITUARY
MR F. W. GRAINGER The death occurred in hospital in Wellington on Thursday, after a brief illness, of Mr Frederick W. Grainger, inspector and supervisor of shipping for the New Zealand Dairy Produce Control Board. He was a brother of Mr C. A. Grainger, of Nelson. He was particularly well known among the farming, seafaring and business communities in both Wellington and Taranaki. Mr Grainger, after serving his apprenticeship with J. J. Niven and Co. at Napier, was for many years engineer with the North British and Hawkes Bay Freezing Company in the same town. Later he went to sea and qualified for a first-class marine engineer’s certificate. He was appointed engineer and manager of the West Coast Refrigerating Company when the works opened at Patea, and held that position for many years. A visit to Great Britain in order to supervise the building of a ship to carry dairy produce from Patea enabled Mr, Grainger to obtain an insight into the methods adopted in that country in the handling and storage of dairy produce. His long knowledge of refrigeration made invaluable in this war his advice on the storage of produce awaiting shipment overseas. When the need arose for quickly increasing the cold storage accommodation in New Zealand, in view of the possible delay in shipping large quantities of produce, Mr Grainger took a prominent part in planning and carrying out the necessary large-scale expansion measures. For many years Mr Grainger took a prominent part in Masonic affairs. He held various offices in the New Zealand Grand Lodge and also in other branches of freemasonry, and was a keen and popular member of the Thorndon Lodge. He was also a keen bowler. Mr Grainger is survived by Mrs Grainger and an adult family of four daughters and two sons. The two sons are overseas, one being an engineer in the merchant navy. The other, a member of the Second N.Z.E F., was captured in Crete and is a prisoner of war in Germany. 1)R R. A. FREEMAN London, Oct. 1.
