HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

BUSINESS AT YESTERDAY’S SITTING Wellington, July 2, Speaking to a petition asking the Government to take steps to combat venereal disease, Mr Anderton (Govt., Eden), in the House of Representatives to-day, paid a tribute t. the work being done by the Health Department. Mr Anderton, who is chairman of the Public Health Committee, said that tha committee’s finding was that the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. Thi* recommendation, he said, was not dua to an y dissatisfaction by the committee with the way the Government and the Health Department were fighting the disease. On the contrary the committee had been very favourably impressed by the evidence of departmental officers which showed New Zealand was in a happy position in connection with the disease. Mrs Dreaver (Govt., Waitemata) stressed the fact that education and cleanliness were the main factors in combating the disease, and she considered local bodies should be in a position to advise the public concerning clinics. Concerning clinics, Mr Anderton, reporting on behalf of the Public Health Committee on Osteopathic Practitioner*’ Bill, stated that the committee recom. mended that the Bill be not allowed to proceed. The committee, however, expressed the opinion that the Government should introduce a Bill securing a measure of control over persons professionally engaging in the practice of healing other than those already recogni^» d New Zealan <3 by statute. Mr Anderton said the recommendation was made against the Bill being allowed to proceed because it would involve the appropriation of public money.
