NELSON POTATOES

MID-SEASON PRICES SHOULD BE SATISFACTORY TO GROWERS COMMENT BY FARMERS’ UNION PRESIDENT “The prices are quite good if we can be sure the potatoes will be taken when they are ready,” said Mr W. D. Dron, president of the Nelson Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union, this morn, ing, when commenting on the prices of potatoes under the contract system.

He said that Nelson was mainly concerned with the mid-season crops. Prices for the North Island and Nelson district for mid-season potatoes are: December delivery, £l4 a ton free on rail, sacks included; January, £l2; February, £ll. If the potatoes were accepted when they were ready during those months, and if the grading was reasonable, growers should be quite satisfied, said Mr Dron. Last year a lot of potatoes were excluded because the Government kept altering the grading. Potatoes that should have been delivered in December were sold on the March grading, which required larger potatoes. It was felt, too, that the March grades were a little severe on growers. Mr Dron considered the contract system far better than setting ceiling prices, if it implied a guarantee that potatoes would be accepted at the fixed prices as the crops were dug. If tha growers accepted contracts it was up to the Government to take the potatoes when they were delivered, even if they were not required at that time, he said
