GENERAL ELECTION
DATE NOT KNOWN VET OPPOSITION CURIOSITY IN HOUSE (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) Wellington, This Day. Before the House of Representatives adjourned yesterday to meet again on 20th July for a very strenuous legislative programme, Opposition members showed the liveliest curiosity regarding the probable general election date. The Prime Minister laughingly advised , them not to get excited. “We are not worrying,” commented Mr S. G. Holland, Leader of the Opposition and Mr W. J. Broadfoot (Nat., Waitomo) explained: “We are like the racehorse. We want to start.” The subject was first raised by Mr W. Sullivan (Nat., Bay of Plenty) who said tiiat an announcement at the earliest possible date would assist members in outback places ip arranging their programme. "I can’t tell you at the moment," said the Prime Minister in reply. “There are matters, such, as electoral arrangements and other things to be completed but I hope to be in a position to indicate the date when we come back.” In reply to the Leader of the Opposition, Mr S. G. Holland, the Prime Minister repeated a previous assurance that the election would not be sprung on the country. When the date was known it would be immediately announced. The Prime Minister added that it would be obvious to members ; that between 20th July and the date of the election it would mean hard work and long houors, with sittings till midnight and perhaps after, for certain cases, particularly in connection with Estimates, if they were to push through the work to allow adequate time for an election campaign.
