SKULLS OF MURDERERS

[To the Editor] Sir, —I was interested in reading in your columns the article on the old Collingwood street cemetery—also mention of the Maungatapu murderers. I remember going with my father, the late Mr Moss Davis, to call on the late Mr Shallcrass, the then gaoler, who was a friend of his. There were three skulls on his office safe. My father inquired about them, and Mr Shallcrass said that, in making some alterations, they had opened up the graves of Burgess, Levy and Kelly, and these were the skulls therefrom. Pointing to one of them, he spoke of the remarkable depth of the eye socket. Years afterwards. I believe, someone again came across these skeletons and it was remarked that their skulls were missing. I thought this little reminiscence might be of interest. The incident to which I refer happened over 60 years ago.—l am etc., ERNEST DAVIS. Auckland, 29th June.
