OBITUARY

MR WILLIAM McKENZIE Carterton, July 2. Cable advice from Melbourne received by relatives in Carterton announces the death of Mr William McKenzie was born at Parkvale, Carteras “Offside Mac.” The late Mr McKenzie was born at Parkville, Carterton, in 1869. In his early youth he took up football, and soon made his mark and was chosen to represent New Zealand against Australia in 1893. He continued in the New Zealand team in 1894, 1896 and 1897. During this period he won fame as wing forward and also earned the name “Offside Mac,” and by this name he is known throughout the Dominion. In 1930 he joined the staff of the “Wairarapa Leader,” which was later absorbed by the “Wairarapa Daily News.” After some years here he was engaged by “The Dominion,” Wellington, as circulation manager and organiser. After some successful years he took up an appointment on the “N.Z. Herald” and held this appointment till he retired four or five years ago. With manpower shortage he took up a position with the “Melbourne Age,” which 1 e held till his death. His brothers in New Zealand are Messrs E. McKenzie, All Black selector, N.Z.R.U., Jack and Herbert, all of Carterton, and Norman, Hawkes Bay, selector for the famous Ranfurly Shield team, and well known as a sporting writer. He leaves two sons, Lieut. Alan McKenzie, Royal Navy, and Roger, in Melbourne. —P.A. MRS JANET PALMER There passed away at the Nelson hospital recetly Mrs Janet Palmer, who was born at Brightwater 80 years ago, and was a daughter of the late Mr Peter Kerr. After her marriage to Mr Harry Palmer, she and her husband took up residence at Pigeon Valley, where they lived until a few years ago. Then then moved to 88 Valley where they spent the rest of their days. Mr Palmer died six years ago. Mrs Palmer was of a vory kind and loving disposition, and leaves behind many friends. She is survived by a family of two daughters and three sons: Mrs A. Eales, Spring Grove, Mrs I. M. Tarlton of North Auckland, Mr A. J. Palmer, Hope, Mr H. A. Palmer, Rimu Bay, Pelorus Sounds, and Mr Lew Palmer, Riwaka. Two sons predeceased her. There are eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
