COAL PRODUCTION IN U.S.
MILLIONS OF TONS BELOW SCHEDULE MANY MINERS STILL OUT The Government did not desire to nationalise the coal industry, and hoped to return the mines to private ownership at the earliest possible date, said Mr Ickes, Secretary of the Interior, giving evidence before the House Ways and Means Committee. He hoped the Government operation of the collieries would be exceedingly brief, but regretted to say, there was nothing leading him to believe so. It is now touch and go whether enough coal will be mined to meet the nation’s requirements. Since Ist April coal production was 23.000,000 tons below schedule because of the uncertainty consequent on the hesitancy of operators to make the necessary capital outlay. A chaotic situation has arisen which has adversely affected coal production. The Associated Press of America says j reports from coalfields indicate that a resumption of mining might be a slow process. Many miners still remain out in Alabama.—P.A.
