RIVERS CONTROL
NO MAJOR WORKS DURING W (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) Wellington, This Day. “There is no prospect of major rivers-control and soil-conservation work being undertaken during the war period, but research and investigations are being carried out as far as the limited staff available will permit,” said the Minister of Works (Mr Semple) in the annual Public Works Statement presented to Parliament to-day. The Minister said that the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council appointed under the Act of 1941 had met regularly and was pursuing its investigations with a view to determining broad questions of policy which could be mplemented in the future. It was anticipated that during the ensuing year it would be possible to constitute a number of catchment areas as a preliminary step towards the election of catchment boards for the various districts. Coptact had already been made with a number of local authorities to discuss their river and soil-conserva-tion problems, and there was every indication that they would co-oper-ate as far as possible with the council in its important work.
