SYDNEY THRONGED
LARGE EASTER CROWDS Sydney, April 27. With war jobs and curtailed travel facilities preventing their going to the country, great crowds thronged Sydney during the Easter week-end. Streams of people poured into the city from all directions on Sunday afternoon to which the Anzac Day march and on Saturday trams, trains, and ferries were packed with pleasure-seekers on their way to sporting fixtures and theatres. Leave for tram workers was cancelled at the week-end but, in spite of this, the tramways service was heavily taxed to cope with the volume of traffic. It is estimated that 80.000 people, most of whom travelled by tram, went to Randwick on Saturday for the Sydney Cup meeting. Another 16.500 saw the Rugby League match at the Sydney cricket ground. Crowds at other football ovals, at the. trotting meeting at Harold Park, and the greyhound races at Wentworth Park also were large. For several hours after Saturday’s sporting fixtures ended people were endeavouring to reach their homes in the suburbs and tram and train services were heavily taxed.
