SWIMMING CHAMPIONS

CONTEST IN NELSON ON SATURDAY VISITORS FROM WELLINGTON AND BLENHEIM In the Wellington team competing in the swimming carnival at the Municipal Baths on Saturday afternoon are:— Miss J. Murray and Miss S. de Cent, junior girls (the last-named was second in the 100 yards junior freestyle at Hamilton).

Miss C. Eichelbaum and Miss T. Reedy, intermediate girls. Miss Eichelbaum was second in the 75 yards breaststroke at Hamilton. Miss Reedy was second in the 100 yards backstroke championship. Miss B. Casey: This girl was New Zealand junior champion in 1941, and is at present the holder of the 100 yards and 220 yards North Island championship. J. Watt, ex-intermediate New Zealand champion at 100 yards and 220 yards, is at present Wellington senior champion. D. Dowse: 100 yards intermediate breaststroke champion of the North Island, and winner of the Peck Shield Harbour Race. Miss M. Teague, 75 yards junior North Island breaststroke champion. Ross Hatchwell, junior boy, is a very promising swimmer. F. Sexton, Wellington intermediate champion.

This team will be opposed by swimmers from the Ladies’ and Men’s Club in Blenheim, as well as Nelson swimmers. There are 30 swimmers from the Blenheim Clubs. Prominent among them are Miss A. O’Connor who is the holder of the junior breaststroke championship of the Nelson centre, and Miss M. Brennan, the Blenheim freestyle champion.

The Nelson team includes Misses N. Dixon, E. Nesbit, L. Mabin (senior ladies), B. Hurst. J. Hurst, H. Smith. N. Gibbs, M. Nesbit (intermediate girls). J. Kotua, J. Harris, R. Harris, J. Rout, G. Rout, J. Williams, M. McLauchlan, G. Brown, junior girls. In the boys’ section are L. Barry, D. Heaps, D. Field, P. Kotua, M. Murray, T. Roberts, Adams (ntermediate), C. Barry. R. Williams, B. Coleman, J. D. Campbell, B. Kirby, and J. Daniell. junior boys. These swimmers should quite worthily represent Nelson in the swimming line. The public should not only see good sport but at the same time will be supporting local swimmers by attending.
