SUNK BY NEW ZEALAND CORVETTES ACTION OFF GUADALCANAR Wellington, This Day The Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, stated last night that he had received official information that two ships of the Royal New Zealand Navy serving with Admiral W. F. Halsey’s forces in the South Pacific area sank a large Japanese submarine on Friday night.

In a message to Mr Fraser releasing the information, Admiral Halsey said the submarine was sunk off Guadalcanar on the night of January 29-30 by two New Zealand corvettes. They captured one enemy officer. Onj of the vessels suffered minor damage. The alert and courageous action of the crew of those gallant little ships merited the highest praise.—P.A.
