WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT TAKAKA Mrs Lockhart presided over a good attendance of members at the October meeting of the Takaka Women’s Institute. Two new members, Mrs Deavoll and Mrs Bowen, were proposed and welcomed. The president spoke on the motto for the month “Life is short but there is time for courtesy.” An invitation was received to the W.D.F.U. dance to be held in November. As the secretary intimated that she could not attend the council meeting in Nelson, Mrs Budd was appointed to take her place. Several beautifully knitted garments for the Air Force were brought in and more wool distributed. Rags for cleaning purposes for the ; military forces were again appealed for. The collection for lepers was finalised, 1 and 27s 6d handed over to the fund. The competition “tongue twisters,” was most amusing, and twisters were produced that even the proverbially nimble tongue of woman found difficulty > in repeating. The roll call. "How and where I’d . like to spend my leisure time,” was well I responded to. A complete change from . the daily round in the home seemed to 1 be most desired by members. A good deal of amusement was caused

by the short “quiz” session conducted" by Mrs Stobie. The “best bloom” com-* petition brought such an array of flow- £ ers that judging was difficult. Results Z were Miss Scott 1, Mrs Budd 2.
