TASMAN MEMORIAL
SITE IN GOLDEN BAY TERCENTENARY CELEBRATIONS I In connection with the Tasman tercentenary celebrations m December, a memorial is to be erected on the coast in Golden Bay. For the purpose of selecting the site of the memorial Dr. .1. C. Beaglehole (lecturer in history at Victoria University College) and Mr Pi. A. Plischkc, on behalf of the Internal Affairs Department, paid a two-day visit to Golden Bay this week. Before returning to Wellington last evening Dr. Beaglehole said that the coast between Pohara and Ligar Bay had been inspected. They had been greatly impressed by the beauty of the area. “It is a marvellous piece of coast for the erection of such a memorial.” he added. He could not make any announcement on the site selected but said that a recommendation would be made to the Government and m due course the memorial would be erected. The site would be somewhere along the coast on the Pohara, Tarakohe, Ligar Bay section. It was intended that the tercentenary celebrations would extend over several days and would include a function at Okarito on th* West Coast.
