CIVIL DEFENCE
GOVERNMENT ATTITI DE CRITICISED Auckland. Oct. 21 A brief but strongly-worded criticisrr ol the Government’s delays in dealint with the civil defence manpower problem was uttered by the Mayor, Mr Allum. in opening a conference on tirewatching at the Town Hal: "One of our principal difficulties is j over the allocation of manpower.” said Mr Allum. "It is impossible to imagine how this question could have btit'll dealt with in a more unbusinesslike manner than it has been We realise that men must go to tight. The trouble is that the resulting shortage has not been laced up to. If there * are not sufficient men aged 18 to 65 1 for civil defence, youths and women will have to act, but the authorities i have done nothing about it You can understand how I get a little impatient ! with the red tape and circumlocution j that surrounds what we are trying to ! do."—P.A.
