CONSENT FOR RETRIAL
REASONS FOR DELAY SOUGHT IFrom Our Own pnHlaniemary Wellington, This Day. Reference to a statement made by the Chief Justice. Sir Michael Myers, in the Supreme Court at Palmerston North on Tuesday at the retrial of Charles Gough was made in the House of Re - presentatives yesterday by Mr W. P. Endean (Nat., Remuera). He gave notice of his intention to ask the At-tornejr-General to explain the reason for the delay in giving his consent to the retrial of Gough, branch secretary of the Dairy Factory Workers’ Union, on a charge of making a subversive statement to employees of the Oroua Downs Dairy Factory on 24th February. Mr Endean said by way of note to his question that consent was given two days before the expiration of the six months. The Chief Justice had stated that 700 years ago there was extorted from a despotic recalcitrant king a charter of English liberty in which it was stated that justice shall not be delayed.
