NAZI DEMANDS

j FUTURE OF DENMARK ARMING OF MERCHANT FLEET “VOLUNTARY” ”0-OPERATION (Rec. 11.15 a.m.) New York, Oct. 8. The Stockholm correspondent of the New York “Times” says persons in touch with the Government understand that German demands on Denmark include, firstly, the arming of the Danish merchant fleet against British and Russian bombers and submarines; secondly, a Danish declaration of war against Russia; thirdly, ostensible “voluntary” co-operation with Greater Germany; fourthly, the dispatch of more skilled workers to Germany; and fifthly, increased shipments of food to Germany. The correspondent points out that the Nazis would hardly precipitate a crisis merely over shipping, unless it was absolutely vital in the face of British and American bombings. German communications are also significant. Danes can’t found to fire against Allied aircraft and the Danish Government would not admit German gunners. i The King and the Government are prepared to go to extremes to avoid submission which would be contrary to the wishes 0 f the majority of the pepole. DANISH SOLDIERS FIRED ON German soldiers fired on and wounded a number of Danish patriots in Copenhagen, reports the Moscow Information Bureau. A Danish Nazi Party meeting was interrupted by shouts of “Down with the Nazis” and "the Germans should leave Denmark.” A fight followed in which several Nazis were injured. The Germans then opened fire.—B.O.W. CRUCIAL NEGOTIATIONS IN COPENHAGEN London, Oct. 7. It is reported from Stockholm that crucial negotiations have proceeded in Copenhagen all day between the German and Danish authorities. Though the possibility of a complete break be- ' tween the two countries still exists, the ! belief is growing that the Germans are { hesitations to arouse Denmark to fur- 1 ther hostility. According to Reuter’s Stockholm correspondent, the German demands include at least two that affect the constitutional as well as other fundamental points. It is believed in Stockholm that the Danish Government is determined to reject any anti-constitutional demands.
