MANPOWER OFFICER CALLS FOR REINSTATEMENT APPEAL BY EMPLOYERS Wellington, This Day. An appeal of considerable interest to employers and employees alike came before the Wellington Manpower Industrial Committee yesterday, when Denhard Bakeries Ltd. sought reversal of an order of the district manpower officer requiring them to reinstate in their employ two employees dismissed by them on grounds of serious misconduct. Mr D. F. Lagan, assistant secretary of the New Zealand Employers’ Federation. appeared with Mr A. J. Glegg. managing director of Denhard Bakeries, in support of the appeal. Mr A. A. Mc-
| Donald, secretary of the Wellington Baking Trades Employees’ Industrial Union of Workers, appeared on behalf of the workers concerned. Mrs D. Matthews and Mrs I. Walsh, bread dispatchers. Mr F. H. Waters, district manpower officer, was present. Mr Lagan said that the appeal was made on two grounds, first, that the decision of the manpower officer was against the common law as affecting master and servant, and secondly, that the dismissals were fully justified by the conduct of the workers. Mr B. L. Hammond, a member of thfe committee: Do not the regulations abrogate the common law? They state that such dismissals must be approved by the manpower officer. The committee ruled to that effect. Mr Lagan called evidence to support the conclusion that the dismissals were justified.
Mrs Matthews gave evidence denying the allegations against her. The committee reserved its decision. FORMER DECISION REVERSED rri Tir ~ Wellington, This Day. , Wellington Manpower Industrial Committee gave a decision reversing thf order of the district manpower officer requiring Denhard Bakeries Ltd to reinstate two women employees dismissed by the employers on the grounds of unreliability, unpunctuality and absenteeism. The committee said it was due to the manpower officer to stale that much of the evidence adduced before the committee was not known to him at the time of his de- ' cision.—P.A.
