ADSENTEEISM FROM FACTORY

EVIDENCE BEFORE COMMITTEE Wellington, This Day. During the hearing of an appeal before the Wellington Manpower Indus .trial Committee yesterday, evidence was given by a clothing factory representative about the degree of absenteeism among its employees. The agent for the appellant had put before the committee as a point in favour of permission being granted appel lant to leave the factory the fact that except on two occasions no overtime had been worked there. The factory representative said that the absenteeism of some of the workers

i was a factor, apart from shortage of j materials. I "Why should we pay overtime rates » when some girls stay away two or three ! days in the week?” she asked. “We did ! try working on Saturday, but they stay- { ed away during the week just the ! same.” Answering Mr J. Arthurs, a member ; of the committee, she said there was a ! lot of absenteeism in the factory. Not 1 all of the employees stayed away, but there were some who were away one, two and three days a week, apart from absence for sickness. Mr Arthurs: Have you reported this to the manpower officer? The factory representative: No; but I will do so in the future.
