FLOOD WARNING

PAIIIATUA TURNS OUT I’ahiatua, Aug. < The emergency alarm sounded at 4.5 G a.m.. giving warning of fiood. A torrent flowed over the eastern end of Main street for the second time within a month. The E.P.S. promptly placed sandbags to keep the water out of premises, but it got into two shops. No damage was done. The water receded at dawn, and the all-clear sounded at 7 a.m. The earthquakes are believed to have deflected the run-off from the Balfour Hills, and the County ar.d Borough Councils have agreed to dig a drain to the river. On the present occasion only 1.45in of rain fell, and the drainage system was adequate. People’s nerves hav been shaken as the result of the earthquakes and flood. This morning many expected an a;r raid—P.A.
