STARTLING EXPERIENCE
WHIRLWIND STRIKES HOUSE PAPER STRIPPED FROM WALLS Invercargill, Oct- 24. A startling experience befel Mr and Mrs A. H. Barnes, Greenhiils. near Bluff, on Thursday night when a whirlwind struck their house about 9 o’clock. It was hailing heavily at the time. Suddenly, above the noise of the storm, they heard a thunderous roar. Almost immediately the wind struck the house with tremendous force. "It seemed as if tHe whole house was going to tumble about our ears,” said Mrs Barnes. "The force of the wind was so great that it blew open the back door. I tried to shut it, but the wind was too strong and my husband had to come to my assistance. The wind blew in the fanlight of a bedroom and you can guess its strength from the fact that it stripped paper and scrim off the wall. This morning I found tacks from the scrim lying on the bed on the opposite sode of the room.” The car shed, a temporary structure, was blown down, and a motor-cycle belonging to Mr Barnes was carried several feet and thrown against the house, A scrub hedge was blown down and a piece of roofing iron was carried 200 yards and twisted out of shape.—P.A.
