S.M The accused. Arnold Lawrence ! Hammond, was charged with exceeding 40 miles an hour on Wakefield Quay while carrying another person ! on the motor cycle other than in a | side-car, and further, with driving at i a speed dangerous to the public. Ham- i mond did not appear. Tne Traffic Inspector said that he , was driving the patrol car along the. Rocks road when he was passed by a motor cyclist who was riding at an excessive speed. He drove along behind the cyclist and checked his speed. He was doing 45 miles an hour when he passed the Richardson street intersection and by the time he passed the in- : tersection with Victoria Crescent his speed was 51 miles an hour. The inspector said he drew level with the motor cycle and accused caught a glimpse of the patrol car out of the corner of his eye. “Then he really started to move.” said the inspector ‘T kept up with him and was going so fast that I didn't dare look at the speedometer. The speed then was over f ’6O miles an hour.” The inspector added that lie managed to stop accused by the wharf. The charge of riding at over 40 miles ! an hour while carrying a pillion rider was the first he had ever brought un- ! der that regulation. A motor cyclist ,] was not entitled to ride at over 40 ■ m.p.h. with a pillion rider at any time. j When the offence was committed there; was considerable traffic on the road. Accused was fined £1 (costs 12s) on | the first charge, and £4 (costs 10s) on ] the second. i J
