FEEDING OF SCHOOL CHILDREN
ARRANGEMENTS IN BRITAIN Rugby, Oct. 21. An extension of the feeding arrangements for school children was announced to-day. Speaking in the House of Lords, the Minister of Food, Lord Woolton, said that a great increase in the number; of meals served in schools would be I brought about by increasing the fin- j ancial grant from the Treasury to j local authorities and by bringing into! immediate action cooking depots! which had been set up for meeting emergency feeding of the civil popu-j lation should the occasion arise. There would shortly be 250 of these' depots, with a capacity for serving 400.000 meals daily to children. Ini addition, 4000 meal centres which 1 had already been established in cities: and industrial areas would be made available. Lord Woolton recalled the measures taken to assure adequate milk for' children up to 17 years of age, both in schools and at their homes, and added that special steps had been taken, in which the generosity of the United States played a great part, to make up the shortage of fresh fruit by the supply and distribution to! children of fruit juices —8.0.
