PRIVATELY OWNED WATERSHEDS

“For many years the council of the league has been very concerned because of its knowledge that the lands forming the watersheds of many important rivers are privately owned. At anytime the forest clothing, which is the only protection to the low lands, may he destroyed at the whim of the private owner. Such watersheds should have been retained by the State at the beginning of settlement, and the Government should remedy the position by at once acquiring these areas.” This statement was made by Mr A. Leigh Hunt, F.R.G.S., chairman of the New Zealand Forestry League, at its annual meeting in Wellington last night, when he spoke on the subject of erosion as a national menace.
