HOSPITAL OUT-PATIENTS
ITo the Editorl I Sir, —In your edition of the 9th inst. [appeared reference to alterations in the ! system of attendance to outpatients at J the Nelson Public Hospital, as decided [upon by the Hospital Board the previous day. Among other references the following sentence appeared: “It was pointled out that a hospital outpatient dej partment’s real function was not to [treat trivial complaints and minor maladies but to provide an investigation and consultative service for cases whom the 'outside doctors felt required the more 'detailed type of investigation which the I hospital could give.” i It is suggested that the real function ! of a public hospital outpatients’ department is to facilitate the carrying out of I the board’s prime responsibility, i.e. the I treatment of residents suffering from injury or disease. The difference in [understanding of the real functions of a public hospital outpatients’ department is apparent. Which is nearer to the correct understanding?—i am, etc., PRO BONO PUBLICO. Nelson, 11th October.
