HOW HITLER PERIL HELPS
The “evil genius” of Adolf Hitler has advanced American aviation 20 to 30 years. Hitler has misused the aeroplane. He has taken an invention which can—and eventually wall —make good neighbours of the nations of the world, and he has used it to kill and enslave his neighbours. But to cope with him, we are being forced to develop aviation beyond our wildest imaginations. “The air invasion of Crete and the destruction of the German battleship Bismarck brought the value of aviation so squarely that the same week of the Bismarck’s bombing saw the President of the United States asking Congress for another 3 billion dollars for military and naval aircraft “Two years ago in this country there was 50,000 workers in the aviation industry. Next year there will be at least 400,000. Two years ago this nation’s aviation products were worth 125,000,000 dollars. Last year they reached 550.000,000. dollars, and next year they will exceed 3 billion dollars in value. Two years ago there were about 25.000 civilian pilots in the United States. To-day there are 100.000.”—(Brig.-Gen. Donald H. Conj noily, Administrator of U.S. Civil Aeronautics. 3 6/41).
