WHAKAREWA HOME

VISIT BY MEMBERS OF SYNOD On Wednesday members of the Nelson Synod paid a visit to the Whakarewa Home to see for themselves something of the social work of the Church in the Diocese of Nelson. Upon arrival they were entertained at morning tea and were welcomed by the chairman ol' trustees (the Bishop), Mr W. R. Tiwini (member of the board of trustees) and Mr G. N. Beatson (master). I The Bishop referred to the value of ] the work of caring for boys who j might otherwise have little chance | and urged that the whole Diocese i should regard the Home and the welfare of its inmates as a Diocesan responsibility. Mr Tiwini, the only remaining local descendant of the Maoris who had made possible the establishment of the Home, welcomed synodsmen, and urged that the work at Whakarewa should not be ever allowed to languish through lack of support. After the boys had sung two bright choruses under the leadership of Mrs Wratt, the visitors were conducted over the Home and the farm. The boys, right down to the tiny tots, proved to be most capable and enthusiastic “pilots” and “adopted” synodsmen during the visit. The visitors were deeply impressed with the wonderfully happv spirit of the children who provided ample evidence of the q#re bestowed upon them. Farmer members of Synod were favourably impressed with the appearance and condition of the 30 odd acres of farm which surrounds the Home. Synodsmen returned with their interest in the Home greatly stimulated.
