TAKAKA OLD BOYS’ FOOTBALL CLUB
ANNUAL MEETING HELD At the annual meeting of the Old Boys’ Football Club, Takaka, held on Wednesday evening, the president (Mr H. F. Solly) presided. The balance sheet showed a credit of £2 12s 6d on the year's working. The statement was adopted. ANNUAL REPORT In the course of his annual report, the president said that the 1940 season had been very successful for the club. With the exception of one game, which was a draw, the club had won every match. Three players had gone on active service and the club wished them a safe journey and a speedy return. Owing to the war situation generally, football this season would probably be confined to the juniors. OFFICERS ELECTED The election of officers resulted as follows: Patron. Mr J. A. Lockhart (reelected); president, Mr H. F. Solly (reelected); vice-presidents, Messrs J. W. Bensemann. C. J. Ellery, C. Strickland. J. Turley, E. C. Wadsworth. E. H. Nees: club captain, Mr C. J. Ellery (reelected); secretary-treasurer, Mr C. Wadsworth: committee. Messrs W. Bird. A. Small, A. Kay, B. Annear, Jack Robertson and all officials ex-officio: selector, Mr T. Nyhane: coach, Mr B. Annear; delegates to Golden Bay SubUnion, Messrs H. F. Solly and T. Nyhane; auditor, Mr Colin Scott. The annual subscription was fixed at 3s for High School boys and 5s for other players. It was decided to field one junior team, the club colour to be white. RE CLASSIFICATION OF SENIORS Mr Nyhane asked what would be the attitude of the club if, in the event of senior football being abandoned this year, senior players were indiscriminately re-classified as juniors. The question, he thought, was one on which members should express an opinion, as he considered it would not be in the interests of junior football if heavy senior players were allowed to play amongst the younger footballers at the risk of uncalled for injuries in the ranks of the juniors. Mr Ellery said that, in his opinion, while there were quite a number of seniors who should not be re-classified as juniors, on the other hand there should be no objection to re-classi-fication of the lighter type of senior player. Mr Bensemann said his views were s'.nilar to those of Mr Ellery. Common sense would have to be used in reinstating senior players. There was. he said, a certain class of senior player who could be brought into junior football without any harm being done. After some further discussion, Mr C. Wadsworth moved: “That, in the event of there being no senior football in the Golden Bay district this season, the Old Boys’ Club requests the Golden Bay Rugby Sub-union to give very careful consideration to the re-classification of senior players, it being the opinion of this club that there are a number of senior players in the district unsuitable foi re-classification to junior grade.” The motion was seconded by Mr Jack Robertson and carried.
