TOBACCO SUPPLIES
SHORTAGE IN AUSTRALIA [U.P.A.-By Electric Telegraph-Copy right j SYDNEY, Bth February. Unless production of cigarettes and tobacco is increased, and retailers get more supplies, Australians will have to smoke less. This view was expressed by a leading cigarette and tobacco retailer in Melbourne. Rationing of sales to customers had already begun, he «yaici. Tobacconists were living "rrom hand to mouth” in regard to supplies, and smokers would soon be really feeling the pinch*
“Consumption is now gradually overtaking production,” he added, “and wecan foresee a stage when retailers will be having supplies mopped up almost as soon as they get them from the manufacturers. Every Monday morning we get a certain supply—a weekly ration —and by Thursday the complete stock of some brands is sold out.
“At the present rate that will soon apply to all brands of cigarettes and tobacco, and eventually smokers will have to smoke less.”
To relieve the situation, this retailer suggested that Rhodesian leaf be imported from South Africa, and that the method of distribution be overhauled.
