TOLL OF THE ROAD

FIGURES FOR JANUARY [United Press Association] WELLINGTON, 11th February. Despite petrol restrictions, 19 lives were lost in road accidents last month and several hundred were injured, said the Minister of Transport (Mr Semple) to-day. This is considerably higher than the avvage accident loss during the past ten months. In January, 1939, although no petrol restrictions were in force, fewer lives were lost on. the roads. During the twelve months of last year at least 4149 persons were injured in road accidents (2000 seriously) and 184 were killed. These figures proved more than ever, said the Minister, the necessity for proper care on the roads, especially during wartime.
