COAL PRODUCTION
RECORD EXPECTED THIS YEAR [From Our Own Parliamentary Reporter] WELLINGTON, This Day. ; After quoting statistics he had given earlier in the session, the Minister of Mines, the Hon. P. Webb, replying to an urgent question asked by Mr C. A. Barrell (Govt., Hamilton), in the House I of Representatives yesterday, said that he confidently expected that the output of coal this year would constitute a record for the Dominion. “The position in the North Island is ; always more difficult than in the t South,” the Minister said, “and at the present time lack of shipping is tern- ! por-rily holding up production and ; causing some collieries to be idle. Everything possible is being done to overcome this difficulty.” The question asked by Mr Barrell concerned statements dealing with the falling off in the production of coal. He asked the Minister to make available figures from the various mines throughout the Dominion. The Minister said that the average yearly production for the five years, 1930 to 1934 inclusive was 2.084,689 tons, and for the subsequent five years the average was 2.219.585 tons, an in- j crease of 134.896 tons. = - '■ ■
