POPE’S PERSONAL WISH
HOPE FOR VULETIDE PEACE [U.P.A.-By Electric Telegraph-Copyright) (Received 4th December, 11.5 a.m.) VATICAN CITY, 3rd December. Indicating that it* was his personal wish, the Pope expressed the hope that a Yuletide truce would be called, either spontaneously or by mutual accord so that bloodshed may not disturb or miserably extinguish the heavenly joy of that hour. FURTHER DISCUSSION USELESS (Received 4th December, 11.5 a.m.) BERLIN, 3rd December. The radio stated that in view of Mr Churchills’ statement on 26th November further discussion of a Christmas truce was useless. In reply to a question in the House of Commons recently, the Prime Minister, Mr ChurchilL said the Government would reject any proposal for a period of armistice to commemorate Christmas.
