C.J.C FINALS

ROYAL CHIEF’S GREAT WIN MEMBERS’ TO NIGGER BOY TWO DEAD-HEATS l ßy Telegraph—Special to “The Mail”] CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. The outstanding feature of the concluding dav’s racing at Riccarton was Royal Chief’s gallant win in the Metropolitan Handicap under 9.12, which is a weight-carrying record for the race. Weather conditions were again favourable and the attendance fully up to the standard of previous years. Speculation was again on the up grade, the turnover amounting to .£83.415, compared with £68.700 last year. This brought the grand total up to £253,204. as against £223.496, an increase ol £29.708. MUFFLED UNLUCKY Only for a very slow beginning Muffler should have won the Suburban . Handicap instead of being beaten by a neck by Cymric. Soon rushing to the front Cymric looked an easy winner till within a furlong of the post, where Muffler, who was last half a mile from home, threw out a desperate challenge. At the finish the leader had to do his best and in another few strides Muffler would have caught him. Cymric is owned by the Christchurch sportswoman Miss M. C. Wilson, for whom he is trained by C. McCarthy. GAYEST SON, EASILY

One of the easiest wins of the meet- j ing was that scored by Gayest Son in the Seymour Handicap, for which he , was sent out at a short price. Though rather slow to get going the favourite j deposed the leaders two furlongs from I home and from this out had matters all his own way. Hastings trained, this <= son of Beau Pere and La Modern is a rare galloper and should win in the best rj of company before the season closes. Eulogist and Craigle both reproduced their earlier form at the meeting and Royal Lancer showed improvement. DESPERATE FINISH j In a desperate battle for the Cressy «: Handicap Harina and Hearth flashed ( past the post on terms, the judge being c unable to separate them. Right to with- ± in 50 yards of the post Harina appeared j t to be winning, but she weakened under j 2 pressure and just failed to head off the r stronger finishing mare from Mosgiel. The favourite. Ruatiti. had every j chance, but failed to reproduce his second day’s form. ANOTHER DEAD-HEAT £ When Pay Roll and Corn Prince flash- j ed past the post on terms in the Pioneer J ! Handicap they established what is pro- 1 ; bablv a record for Riccarton of two J successive dead-heats. The former was a staunch favourite. Nearing home it > looked as if Corn Prince would win. but by a well sustained effort Pay Roll just got to him in the last stride. The honours of the race were all with Pay Roll, who was conceding her stable mate 141bs. Both are trained at Trentham by T. R. George whose team was in race form all through the meeting. In Pay j • RolPthe Nelson sportsman. Mr T. New-j man. possesses a filly of outstanding j ROYAL CHIEF'S POPULAR WIN Though burdened with 9.12 Royal ■ Chief was made a slightly better fav- [ ourite than Little Robin for the Metro-; politan Handicap and his win over the ; Otaki-trained gelding was the star item j ! of the meeting. On this occasion Royal; Chief was much quicker into his stride! than in the Cup. He raced just behind 1 the leading division and a furlong from the post only Little Robin headed him. Responding gamely to L. J. Ellis's vigorous riding the top weight scored a very popular win by a length. Serenata quite failed to reproduce her Cup form, but Capricious went another creditable race into fourth place. Second Innings spoilt his chance at the start, while Passaform was too lame to do himself justice SIR AMYAS FINISHES FAST

Yet another first choice in Sir Am’yas ; came to the rescue of backers by scor-: ing a decisive win in the Hagley Handicap. King’s Toast looked like sue-1 ceeding till nearing the post, where he j failed to withstand a brilliant finishing] effort by Sir Amyas This marked the ! Wingatui representative’s second success at the meeting and stamped him as a greatly improved galloper. DORIA BRILLIANT The Hastings-trained Poutatau was entrusted with the extreme confidence of North Island sportsmen in the Stonyhurst Handicap, but more than met his match in the brilliant Doria. A furlong from the post Poutatau looked al) over a winner, but by a rare finishing effort Doria had his measure 100 yards from home. The winner has generally been regarded as somewhat lacking in stamina, but her gameness in this event and the Oaks Stakes should quite remove that impression. She is owned by the Christchurch sportsman. Mr E. Hay. for whom she is trained by T. H. Gillett. NIGGER BOY AGAIN An interesting afternoon’s racing was concluded in fitting style by the two favourites. Nigger Boy and Not Out. fighting out a rare finish in the Members’ Handicap. Not Out looked the winner till nearing the post, where he jpst failed to stall off a great run by Nigger Boy. This brought the winner’s record for the meeting up to two wins and a second, and he has certainly been a profitable investment for his present owners. Messrs B. and S. Nausbaum, for whom he is trained by J. J. Waller at Awapuni DETAILS OF THE RACING Detailed results (by Press Association) are as follows: > Subui’ban Handicap, of £250; one mile.—2-2 Cymric. 10.11 <H. Hibberd). 1; 1-1 Muffler. 9.13 (R.
