HOME GUARD
COMMANDERS FOR AUCKLAND AND ROTORUA The following appointments of area commanders for the Home Guard were announced at the week-end by the Minister of National Service, the Hon. R. Semple: Area No. 1. Headquarters, Auckland: Major Arthur Wilbert Short, V.D.. 7 Seacliffe Avenue, Belmont. Auckland, N.2. Major Short who is a school teacher in civilian life, served with the N.Z.E.F. during the last war, from 1916 to 1919, in the Auckland Regiment. During 1917 he was invalided home to New Zealand, but on his recovery left again as O.C. of the,4lst Reinforcements with the rank of captain. Since the war he has had long service in the School Cadets and has been awarded the Volunteer Decoration. Area No. 2A. Headquarters. Rotorua: Major John Henry Herrold, D. 5.0., 19. Malfroy Road. Rotorua. Major Herrold who is a farmer in civilian life, served with distinction during the last war. from 1914 to 1919. He rose to the rank of Major in the Auckland Mounted Rifles, serving in Egypt and Palestine. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order, and mentioned in Dispatches.
