SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP COLLEGE DEFEAT OLD BOYS ON | FIRST INNINGS BOWERS AND NEALE SCORE CENTURIES To make up for the loss of College sports clay, Old Boys and College played an all day match on Saturday to catch up with the other fixtures. Winning the toss Old Boys batted in the morning with a somewhat attentuated team, including two emergencies. Goodyer and Lucre soon had the batsmen in trouble, and three were down for 13. At this stage the bowlers were well on top. but a double change and some good work by Dee and Corbett allowed a recovery. Finally the innings ended (one short) at 137. which was considerably more than seemed probable. Dee’s 68 included 12 fours. Goodyer playing his first game for College secured three for 13 off 7 overs. At lunch College had lost four for 40. and it seemed evident that it was “only a matter of keeping Bowers quiet” for Old Boys to win, but this they were quite unable to do. and he literally won the match off his own bat. Seven were down for 80, and eight for 122, but although there was no double figure score after the sth wicket. College reached 207, of which Bowers made no fewer than 152. the ninth wicket adding 81. of which Grant secured only 6. Bowers thrashed the bowling unmercifully in the latter stages, and hit three sixes and 24 fours. He was missed early, but afterwards never looked like getting out. He collected 34 runs off one over. Old Boys then proceeded to do what they have so often done in recent seasons, and staged a great recovery for the second innings, but too late to be of much use. The opening pair put up 100 partnership in 45 minutes, and after 90 minutes the innings was declared at one for 207. Neale hit a splendid century in an hour and a half. College were put in again and lost two wickets quickly, but stumps were drawn when it was obvious that no outright result could be secured. In the afternoon play of about 220 minutes 412 runs were scored.
