NEW ZEALANDER DECORATED
BOMBER SHOOTS DOWN ENEMY PLAJJE (Received 25th October, 9.20 a.m.) RUGBY, 24th October. The D.F.C. has been awarded to Pilot Officer D. H. McArthur, of Canterbury, New Zealand, aged 20, and the D.F.M. to Sergeant Mylod, aged 19, who were pilot and front-gunner respectively of an aircraft detailed to carry out an attack on a target in the Ruhr one night this month. On the return flight, and while still over enemy territory, Pilot Officer McArthur noticed an aircraft some distance ahead and below him caught in the beams of several searchlights. This aircraft then gave recognition signals and the searchlights were extinguished. McArthur decided to attack and the aircraft was put into a steep dive. By his excellent shooting and judgment Mylod shot down the enemy planes in flames with nly four short bursts of fire. The fire caused by the wrecked aircraft was seen thirty miles away on the homeward flight. McArthur has now completed 35 major bombing operations, during jvhich he has shown grim determination to carry out instructions. Mylod has taken part in seven major bombing missions and has shown great determination, initiative and gallantry.
