IMPROVED WATER SUPPLY
HOSPITAL FIRE FIGHTING SERVICE The Nelson Hospital Board wrote to last night’s meeting of the Nelson City Council submitting a suggestion for the improvement of the water supply for fire fighting purposes at the hospital. The City Engineer (Mr C. I. Kidson) reported that in conjunction with the hospital authorities he had arranged for sufficient water to be made available for fire purposes at the hospital.
This had been done as follows:—“A fire plug has been cut into the supply from the 20,000 gallon tank at the hospital itself. This will supply water for fire fighting for the first 20 minutes. Should the pressure in the mains be too low water from the tank on Britannia Heights will be immediately valved into the mains, and this should supply sufficient water for the next hour. In the meantime other consumers on the high levels will be restricted drastically, and sufficient pressure will then be, available for a fire of indefinite duration.”
Councillor E. R. Neale pointed out that a statement made that the hospital was on the dead end of a main was incorrect. The Fire Brigade Superintendent had made suggestions for improving the institution’s fire service twelve months ago in his annual report, but the proposals had not been given effect to. The Deputy Superintendent was now satisfied with what had been done to meet any requirements until the city supply was available from the Roding. The engineer said that a six-inch main would be laid past the hospital on Waimea road and there would be a four-inch main on the Kawai street side of the property.
