5 PER CENT. WAGE INCREASES

EFFECT ON CITY COUNCIL’S PAYMENTS PROVISION FOR STAFF OUTSIDE AWARDS A report on the effect of the general order by the Arbitration Court for 5 per cent, increase on all award wages was submitted by the Mayor (Mr G. L. Page) to last night’s meeting of the City Council. Mr Page said that the additional expenditure on account of award wages in all the council’s departments would total £1046 for the remainder of the present financial year, and £I6BB next year. If 5 per cent, on £350 of the salaries of members of the staff not covered by awards was also granted the total increases over all the council’s accounts would be £1254 this year and £2OOO next year. The Mayor moved that the council adopt the proposal that council employees not covered by awards be granted the 5 per cent, increase, with a maximum increase of £l7 10s (5 per cent, on £350) for each employee concerned.

Councillor J. A. Harley seconded the motion which was carried unanimously.
