THE HOME GUARD
RECRUITS URGENTLY NEEDED RAPID MARCH OF EVENTS MR SEMPLE'S WARNING [United Press Association] CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. “The rapid march of events in the Pacific as well as further afield indicates there must be no time lost in bringing the home defence of New Zealand up to its maximum footing,” said the Hon. R. Semple, Minister of National Service, in an interview to-day, when he again stressed the urgent need for recruits for the Home Guard. “If the rest of the people will follow the lead of the Returned Soldiers’ Association the job will be done.” he added Everywhere he had travelled in New Zealand he had found returned soldiers keenly behind the Home Guard movement. Their offers of co-operation were encouraging and the discussions he had had with officials of the association had been most helpful. This was the spirit the Government wanted. Returned soldiers of New Zealand would be the bulwarks of the Home Guard.
