THREE-POWER PACT
SUGGESTED SECRET ESCAPE CLAUSE JAPANESE ADVANCES TO BRITAIN [U.P.A.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyrightj SHANGHAI, 22nd October. The Japanese are reported to have informed the British Ambassador in Tokio, Sir Robert Craigie, that the tripartite pact has a secret escape clause permitting each signatory to decide the condition under which it will come to the aid of the others in the event of their being attacked. The Japanese are reported to be attempting to convince Sir Robert Craigie that further British efforts to come to an agreement with Japan would not be useless, but the British are viewing the advances with considerable hesitation.
