SEALING WORK ON STREETS FIRE RISK IN SUMMER MONTHS The fortnightly meeting of the Tahunanui Town Board was attended by the following members: Messrs C. H. Chamberlain (chairman), W. Gould, J Logan. A. B. Ingram, L. C. Haywood, and T. W. Roberts. An apology for absence was received from Mr C. Palmer. Mr C. I. Kidson, City Engineer, reported that the sealing of the roads on the fiat in the board's district had been satisfactorily undertaken and assured the board that the surfaces obtained would stand up to the traffic they would be called on to carry. A letter was received from the Tahunanui School Committee asking that a footpath be formed through Burrell Park Tne matter was left in the hands of the Works Committee. Mr Roberts reported on a meeting he had attended at the Nelson City Council Chambers regarding the formation of the Home Guard. It was moved by the chairman, seconded by Mr Gould, that a meeting be called early next week to put the facts before the people of the district and enlist their support. It was stated that Mr J. A Harley and Colonel C. B. Brereton had offered to attend and explain the duties of the Home Guard. A report was received from the Tahunanui Volunteer Fire Brigade pointing out thq necessity for a general clean-up of gorse, lupin and other rubbish in various parts of the district in view of the number of houses which would be menaced by fire in the coming summer months A number of private properties on which clearing work was necessary was detailed and the danger to houses near the beach camping ground was stressed. In regard to this it was stated: “A fire-break a chain wide should be cleared from Parker’s road to Beach road, as lupin and coarse grass is at present bad enough, and later when the dry weather comes on will be absolutely dangerous tcf most residences fronting on the camp reserve We also suggest that a fifteen-foot clearance be made at all fire-places and buildings on the motor camp, as at present some are only five or six feet off the lupin and other rubbish.” It was resolved that notices to clear be sent to all the property owners mentioned in the report. On the motion of Mr Roberts it was resolved that the Main Highways Board's attention be drawn to the nuisance caused by the main drain outlet forming a lagoon at the entrance to the beach.
Accounts totalling £2lB 4s 2d were passed for payment.
