DEFENCE OF DOMINION
DEERSTALKERS’ OFFER TO FORM UNIT [United Press Association) INVERCARGILL. 26th June. Southland members of the New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association decided to-night to offer their services, rifles and equipment to form a unit for the defence of New Zealand. Though most deerstalkers were over the age for overseas service, said the Dominion president, Dr G. B. Orbell, they could perform valuable service in guerrilla warfare in the event of an invasion of New Zealand. They were experienced in negotiating hill and bush country, and their skill in the use of a rifle could be put to advantage. There were about 1500 deerstalkers in Southland, and from 6000 to 10,000 in New Zealand, and they could form a very useful unit.
