HOCKEY

Ex-Nelsonian as Umpire It was interesting to see Mr H. Kelly back on the Nelson hockey field on Saturday. He played in Nelson some years ago and represented Nelson on the wing, filling that position with distinction. On being transferred to Wellington he continued in the game and later took on umpiring. He assisted in umpiring the two senior games on Saturday. Penalty Bully A penalty bully may be ordered when a defender deliberately stops the ball with his foot in the circle if the umpire considers that a goal is thus prevented. In Wellington, apparently, the view is taken that if the ball is stopped in this way anywhere in the circle it is done with the intention of preventing a goal. A penalty bully for this breach was awarded by Mr Kelly (Wellington) in a senior game on Saturday. Women’s Teams Reviewed Huia were at the top of the list at the end of the first round of the women’s hockey championship. They have had to work hard for that position, as in women’s hockey the teams are more evenly matched than has been the case in former years. The Huia Club, led by M. Lynch, have some new players in the team. C. West and M. Young should make good with a little more experience. N. West. M. Lynch and N. Lynch are a tower of strength to the team as backs, while at centre-half L. Gill is playing well. In the forwards E. Crackett, M McFarlane, C. West and M. Young take advantage of every opportunity to

Kia Ora have a number of new players who, with the assistance of J. Kearns, G. Hill and F. Newport, put up a good performance in every game. Of the younger players F. McGlashen, D. Wendleburn, G. Newman and E. Coleman show great promise. Rewa have lost a number of the old players and are practically a new team this year. M. Sparks, D. Stapp, M. Irvine and E. Parkinson are experienced players and bear the brunt of the work but in N. Perry, B. Cox, B. Whiting, M. Marks they have good material for next year.

Wakatu are practically a new team this year. At one part of the season it looked as though this club would lapse, but through the efforts of Miss M. Haase, who. unfortunately, has to stand on the side line because of an accident, Wakatu have a really good team. With a little more combination they will be a hard team to beat. A. Kawharu, as centre forward, has the makings of a good player. She has the backing of promising forwards in M. Tunniciiff, L Simpson. I. Cowin and E. Watson. The half-back line is good. Positional play is their main tropble, but with coaching that should be remedied S. Tarrant and M. Thomas at full-back are sound, M. Thomas especially. G. Rennie in goal is improving.

The Stoke Club have a good team, who have been strengthened this year by the inclusion of Mrs Scott, who is well known in hockey circles in Wellington. It is hard to pick out any individual player in this team, as it is a very even team. J. Gribble at left wing plays a good game and does not make the mistake of going too far before centring. G. Owen and P. Thomason are good forwards. G. Barton, T. Lusty, B. Lusty and M. Owens are hard workers and show great promise. The following players should catch the selector’s eye: J. Gribble. C. West, F Newport. E. Crackett. B. Whiting, O. Owen. M. McFarlane, T. Lusty, L. Gill. G Hill. J. Kearns, M. Lynch. N. I Lynch, M. Thomas, N. West. D. Stapp.
