RUGBY FOOTBALL
Senior Representatives The new coach to the Nelson senior representative Rugby team is Mr George Toon, who has been coaching the Pirate team at Brightwater this season. Mr Toon, said Mr R. Brownlie in nominating him on Monday evening for the position, comes from Canterbury and has played for that province. With players vanishing overnight as it were, the coach as well as the selector will have a difficult, time ahead of them. In Mr O’Sullivan’s selection of the ten forwards, only four have previously represented Nelson, while among the nine backs only two have not. The forwards number some young players. notably McDowell and Schwass. of the Pirate Club, who are improving in each game. Field. Sinclair. McKegnev and Williams of Nelson. are the best of that club’s good scrummagers. Williams is the newcomer of the quartette. Puklowski and Caldwell are Old Boys’ representatives. The former’s line-out play is good: while Caldwell’s weight and pace should be valuable. Biggs and Brassington. of Rival and Hospital respectively. complete che forward selection. Brassington has been the outstanding Hospital player during the season and is a good man anywhere in that side Of the nine backs, there are no less than 5 regular five-eighths available, namely Kotua. Grindle.* Hall. Langrope and Morris: Costello and Ward have both played half-back for Old Boys, the latter finally settling down at full-back; while of the remaining two. Chapman is the only regular wing three-quarter in the selection and Stallard is the obvious centre choice Cross-Kick N. Biggs. Rival forward, after apparently giving up the game was prevailed on recently to turn out again for his club, and gave a good account of himself in Saturday’s match at the park against Nelson. His name appears in the nineteen players selected to train for the home and home match with Marlborough on 6th July. With the score at 6-3 on Saturday, he demonstrated the value of the cross-kick to an unmarked wing three-quarter. Benvin was right in position to score a good try. The fact that Biggs did not intend it to be a cross-kick at all. but in reality had mis-queued a, snap “pot” at goal, is quite beside the point. He then discarded his boots and finished the game in his stockinged feet. Nelson and Old Boys Level With two games of the second round j played the senior points table stands as j follows, with Nelson and Old Boys level:
