BRITISH BY-ELECTION
COMMUNIST LOSES DEPOSIT [U.P.A. —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] LONDON, 13th June. The by-election for the Bow and Bromley seat, held as the result of the death of Mr George Lansbury (Labour) resulted:— Mr Charles Key (Labour) 11,594 Mrs Isobel Brown (Communist) 506 This is the third time Mrs Brown has forfeited her deposit in a by-elec-tion, and she becomes the ninth “Stop the War” candidate to forfeit the deposit since the outbreak of war. For the first time in history an election count was made and announced in an air raid shelter. This was arranged in order to avoid the possibility of the count being interrupted by an air raid. At the general election of 1935 the voting was:—Mr Lansbury, 19,064; Mr H. E. Weber (Conservative), 5707.
